Even if you're wary of oil-based products, the best cleansing oils might change your mind and skin. Contrary to what you may think (looking at you, oily skin types!), these gentle face cleansers are perfect for all skin concerns, and can melt away stubborn makeup without stripping your skin or compromising your moisture barrier. How they work: The oil base pairs with a gentle surfactant and binds itself to dirt and shows stubborn makeup, sunscreen, and grime the way out. Massage thoroughly to dry skin, emulsify with water, and rinse to watch the buildup on your skin wash down the drain without disrupting your moisture barrier.

If you're especially oily or wear longwear makeup, consider double cleansing—a K-beauty staple, which is why Korean cleansing oils are so good (and popular!)—and follow up with a water-based cleanser to reveal a soft, smooth canvas for the rest of your skin-care routine. Ready for the gentlest cleanse of your life? Keep reading to discover our favorites of all we've tested.

Why this is our top pick: Brought to you by the magic of Korean skin care, Man:yo's Cleansing Oil transforms from a silky oil into a luxe, cleansing milk that targets blackheads and whiteheads without clogging your precious pores. Packed with 14 antioxidant-rich plant oils, the formula moisturizes and plumps the skin, while argan kernel oil regulates sebum (a.k.a. oil production) and supports cell regeneration for your smoothest complexion yet. It’s great for all skin types, including acne-prone, so it deeply cleanses without irritating your skin like acid-infused exfoliating options might. Pro tip: When applying, spend extra time on your nose and its nooks and crannies—prime real estate for blackhead buildup.

Why it's worth it: When your skin’s feeling seriously congested, Hanskin’s PHA Pore Cleansing Oil is the kind of product you’ll want on standby. It lightly exfoliates to slough away dead skin cells and blackheads, but thanks to polyhydroxy acid (which penetrates the skin more slowly than its sister acid, alpha hydroxy acid), the formula is still gentle enough for sensitive skin. It also includes breakout-fighting tea tree oil, balanced by jojoba oil and camellia japonica flower extract to keep skin conditioned and calm.

“Hanskin has a corresponding cleansing oil for every acid, but I prefer the PHA for my nighttime routine because it’s the gentlest of the bunch. I’ve been trying to up my exfoliating game, and incorporating a cleanser that helps unclog congested pores and reduce the look of my plentiful blackheads is a super easy way to do just that. (I use a cleansing oil every day after all!) “My daughter's pediatrician does not like to recommend products, but this is one she told us to try out—and it's helped both of us manage our crazy-itchy skin and eczema flare-ups for years! Oil-based washes are great for super sensitive people who don't do well with harsh surfactants (which create fun but often skin-stripping foamy lathers) and skin that can't be in the water for too long (I see you, dermatitis friends!). The nice thing is, when your barrier is highly compromised, you can follow up with Avène's XeraCalm A.D Lipid-Replenishing Cream out of the shower, which helps further reset your skin's microbiome and replenish its skin barrier." —Shanna Shipin, shopping director

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a cleansing oil?

"Cleansing oil" refers to oil-based face washes that replenish moisture and gently remove makeup, excess sebum, and sunscreen. According to Shereene Idriss, MD, a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist, cleansing oils don't strip your skin of its natural moisture, which is essential for a plump, smooth, and fine line-free complexion. "Cleansing oils usually contain an oil base, along with a traditional skin-cleansing ingredient called a surfactant, which helps bind to dirt on the skin and remove it without disrupting the skin barrier," Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, explains further.

How is a cleansing oil different from a cleansing balm?

Both of these cleansers tend to be oil-based and usually contain emulsifiers (substances that stabilize mixtures of oil and water), which turn their formulas milky when in contact with water and rinse away makeup, sunscreen, and excess oil. They’re both very similar, but the main difference between a cleansing oil and a cleansing balm is in their texture. “This reflects that cleansing oil formulas incorporate lighter weight oils than balm formulas,” says Noëlle Sherber, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Washington, D.C.

    Who can use cleansing oils?

In short, everyone! If you have oily or acne-prone skin, the concept of slathering on any oil-based products like cleansing oils might seem counterintuitive—but think again. "Because makeup and sebum are lipophilic [meaning they dissolve in oil], using an oil-based cleanser can be more effective," says David Kim, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City.

While oil-based cleansers—or any cleansers, for that matter—don't stay on your face for too long, it doesn't hurt that most are infused with moisturizing ingredients, like jojoba seed oil, apricot kernel oil, and Centella asiatica extract, which actively nourish skin while giving it a deep clean. If you have sensitive skin, just check the label's ingredients list to ensure the formula doesn't contain any irritants like synthetic fragrances.

How do I use a cleansing oil?

Make sure you work your cleansing oil onto dry skin so it breaks down waterproof makeup, sunscreen, and dirt before emulsifying and rinsing off with lukewarm water, or gently wiping it away with a soft muslin cloth. Plus, since cleansing oil dissolves makeup, it's a great first step if you have product residue on your face. "Use it as a first step to remove all the makeup. Rub it in and massage it in circular motions for two to three minutes to get all the makeup off the skin," Dr. Kim advises.

How often should I use a cleansing oil?

Each product bears different usage instructions, so read the back of the bottle for details on how often to use your cleanser. Still, most cleansing oils are fine to use twice daily, but start once daily to see how your skin reacts to your new pick.

Can cleansing oils clog my skin?

If not rinsed off thoroughly, cleansing oils could potentially clog acne-prone skin, especially if the formula has a thicker feel, says Dr. Sherber. “If your skin is prone to congestion, then cleansing oils that leave an oily residue behind may have the potential to trigger acne, perioral dermatitis, or Malassezia folliculitis—sometimes called ‘fungal acne’,” she says. If you notice breakouts, she recommends switching to formulas that emulsify readily, meaning that they turn into a milky texture when you add water, which are more likely to rinse cleanly.

    Is double-cleansing worth it?

Like with all skin care, whether you double-cleanse or not depends on your personal preferences and lifestyle. In case you need a refresher, double-cleansing—that is, starting your routine with a remove-it-all cleansing oil (or cleansing balm) to dissolve makeup, sebum, and sunscreen before going in with a water-based cleanser to remove remaining impurities—has gone from a niche Korean skin-care step to a mainstream practice over the past decade or so.

However, it's worth noting that double cleansing isn't for everyone's skin-care routines. If you have oily skin and/or wear makeup daily, you might find double cleansing every evening works just fine for you. However, Dr. Kim says that if your skin is normal to dry, or you're only an occasional makeup wearer, double cleansing daily isn't necessary. "Double cleansing [can be] very, very stripping to the skin," Rita V. Linkner, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at RVL Skincare in New York City, previously told Allure. "[Double cleansing always] needs to be followed up with a proper moisturizer to reinstall hydration immediately," she added.

Do I need to double-cleanse when using a cleansing oil?

Double cleansing isn’t required, but Dr. Sherber says it’s a great idea for those with oily, acne-prone, and rosacea-prone skin types. “Since oil attracts oil, noncomedogenic cleansing oils can be helpful for oily skin types, and double cleansing can be a good strategy if skin doesn’t feel completely clean after cleansing oil alone,” she says.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that’s included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best cleansing oils, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Curls Looking Limp and Lifeless? Try a Protein Treatment

The best hair protein treatments for curly hair work differently from your average deep conditioner or hair mask. While moisture-based products add water and softness to the outer layers of the strand, protein-rich masks rebuild the internal structure, patching holes in the hair's cortex left by heat tools, bleach, or constant manipulation. Think of it as reinforcement rather than hydration—they restore strength, improve elasticity, and help curls snap back into their natural pattern.

You'll know you need one when your curls feel mushy or gummy when wet, stretch like rubber, or refuse to hold a curl pattern—no matter how much conditioner you use. These are signs of protein loss (not dehydration!) and indicate a disrupted moisture balance. Protein treatments combat structural weakness, excessive porosity, and that limp, lifeless texture that even the best moisturizers can't fix.

Our Top Protein Treatments for Curly Hair

    • Best Overall: Cécred Reconstructing Treatment Mask, $43
    • Best for Brittle Strands: Amika The Kure Intense Strength Repair Mask, $44
    • Best Leave-In Treatment: Matrix Instacure Anti-Breakage Porosity Spray, $25
    • Best for Quick Repair: Dove Intensive Repair 10-in-1 Serum Hair Mask, $10

    • Best for Frizzy Hair: Hask Keratin Protein Smoothing Deep Conditioner, $10
    • Best for Tighter Curls: SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Protein Power Treatment, $12

But here's the catch: Protein isn't something you can use freely. Overdo it, and your hair swings in the opposite direction, becoming stiff, rough, and brittle. So it’s imperative to choose the right formula for your curl type and damage level, and use it for the correct amount of time. Because this topic can be intimidating, we asked two hairstylists to break down the dos and don’ts and identify the best hair protein treatments for curly hair. Plus, we tossed in some tried-and-true picks from Allure editors’ hair-care routines.

Its patent-pending bioactive keratin ferment, a blend of lactobacillus, hydrolyzed wool keratin, and honey, fills in the micro-cracks left by chemical or thermal damage, reducing breakage and restoring elasticity after just one use. Hydrolyzed rice protein helps defend against split ends, while sea buckthorn oil and squalane cushion the cuticle, so strengthening does not lead to stiffness.

Nashville-based hairstylist Krystal Marie says it “truly helps to repair structural damage and improve the look and feel of hair,” especially for anyone recovering from chemical treatments or regular heat-styling. For best results, she advises “separating freshly shampooed hair into four sections, working the product from ends to midshaft, and processing under a hooded dryer with a cap for 20 minutes before rinsing.”

"When it comes to hair masks, I have to be extra selective because having locs means anything too drying or heavy can cause my locs to snap off. Brittle strands can lead to breakage, and lingering residue can cause buildup, odor, or worse, mold. Cécred’s Reconstructing Treatment Mask passed the test for me. Applied after shampoo and before conditioner, its formula rinses out cleanly, and I experienced way less shedding. My locs felt stronger, looked smoother, and had a subtle oud scent that wasn't overbearing." —Jailynn Taylor, contributor

This is not a conditioner. It is a repair step used before conditioning, and the temporary stiff feel you get post-rinse is due to protein deposition. Follow with a conditioner to soften the hair.

Why we love it: Brittleness occurs when hair loses both moisture and structure, and Amika’s The Kure Intense Strength Repair Mask restores both in one step. A blend of mango, shea, and borage butters works with vegan proteins to help hair retain its shape, resist snapping, and replenish lipids lost to heat and color. Marie calls it a “one-two punch,” explaining, “This product improves strength and imparts moisture at the same time, so it’s ideal for those who don’t want to spend a lot of extra time with multiple products on wash day to give their hair the strength it needs.” She recommends applying it “to wet hair from the ends up to the mid-shaft and allowing it to process without heat for 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.” Because of its balanced formula, Marie adds, “this product can be used weekly, making it ideal as a regular maintenance product for highly porous hair.”

“I’m a huge fan of Amika in general and tend to use the brand’s Hydro Rush products for everyday use; but because I so often heat-style my hair (we’re talking blow-dryer brushes, blow-dryers, and curling irons), keeping Amika’s The Kure on standby is nonnegotiable. It’s almost like a healthy hair trim in a pot, and it makes my split ends look renewed and my hair smoother and more hydrated overall. A little goes a long way since the product is super creamy and thick—I can cover my whole head with just a little scoop. It smells delicious, and even when I don’t leave it on for the full ten minutes (I tend to just do five because who has the time??), my hair still feels super soft and bouncy afterwards.” —Shanna Shipin, senior commerce director

Animal-derived proteins, for example, keratin sourced from wool, bond more tightly to hair because they closely mimic the protein already in the strand, which can make hair feel rigid or overloaded if used too often. Vegan proteins reinforce more flexibly at the surface, supporting weak areas without creating that stiff, brittle effect.

Why we love it: Matrix’s Instacure Anti-Breakage Porosity Spray targets damage where it shows up first, in the mid-lengths and ends. Liquid protein and provitamin B5 help fill in over-porous areas of the cuticle, making hair smoother, less prone to breakage, and easier to style. Hairstylist Annagjid “Kee” Taylor calls it “a must-have for strengthening over-processed hair while keeping it lightweight and smooth,” especially for dryness, chemical damage, or heat stress. She suggests applying it “on damp hair before styling to detangle, protect, and leave strands feeling strong and healthy.” Because the formula is feather-light and pH-balancing, it can be misted on weekly without buildup, making it ideal for fragile hair that needs reinforcing without weight.

The spray goes on evenly, and I don’t have to rinse it out, so I get the benefits of a treatment without adding more steps or time to wash day. It delivers a noticeable change in softness and strength in the same minute you would normally use conditioner. Instead of sitting on top of the hair, the formula uses bio-protein care and glutamic amino serum to feed the fiber with usable amino acids that help refill structural gaps, while ceramides and conditioning agents smooth the cuticle so strands bend without snapping. The texture is dense and clingy, so it stays in contact long enough to work even in a short window, making it ideal for weekly “triage” when hair is showing clear signs of breakage, dullness, or post-color fatigue.

Why we love it: Bleach, relaxers, perms, and repeated color all strip away the internal support that keeps a strand from snapping, and Redken’s Extreme Cat Anti-Damage Protein Reconstructing Rinse-Off Treatment is formulated for that specific kind of damage. It uses strengthening ingredients, such as hydrolyzed wheat protein, that cling to weakened zones to provide temporary structure. Arginine and taurine work deeper to support the hair’s internal strength, so chemically stressed areas are less likely to give way under tension. Because the treatment is weightless and rinses clean, it can slot into a weekly routine without interfering with conditioner or causing buildup, making it realistic for already fragile, chemically compromised hair that cannot tolerate thick coatings.

    Editor’s tip

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

Hydrolyzed wheat protein is wheat protein that has been broken down into smaller fragments so it can actually attach to damaged areas of the hair shaft. Why we love it: Frizz is usually a sign that the cuticle is raised and unprotected, and Hask Keratin Protein Smoothing Deep Conditioner is a cheap but genuinely effective way to bring that surface back under control. The formula relies on keratin to smooth and reinforce the outer layer so strands lie flatter, while jojoba seed oil adds slip and seals in moisture to prevent frizz once hair dries. Hask "helps repair and smooth damaged hair while restoring shine and strength,” Taylor says, adding that it’s especially great “for anyone who uses heat often or has chemically treated hair that needs a weekly moisture boost.” The single-use packet makes it easy to use before a big event or after a rough wash day, and for best results, Taylor recommends, “apply after shampooing, let it sit for about 10 minutes, then rinse for softer, more manageable hair.”

Why we love it: Because 3B to 4C curls are structurally fragile at every bend, the formulas that work best are those that pad the strand and fortify it before manipulation. That’s where SheaMoisture’s Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Protein-Strong Treatment comes in. A blend of shea butter, mafura oil, and baobab oil delivers dense, rich emollience that glides through coils, easing tangles and reducing friction-related breakage. Meanwhile, manuka honey and yogurt proteins help replenish strength where curls are most prone to bending stress, supporting elasticity and bounce. “It’s great for anyone who is dealing with breakage, dryness, or heat damage,” Taylor notes, recommending you use it “on damp hair, either under a steamer or in a cap, to let it really penetrate,” noting that “the results are always silky, shiny, and healthy-looking.”

    Frequently asked questions

How do you know when you need to use a protein mask?

Marie explains that “hair strands that lack protein will often feel mushy or gummy when wet and pop/break easily when stretched or manipulated,” and she describes “boneless” hair that behaves like overcooked pasta as another clear indicator. Taylor adds that “you can tell it’s time for a protein mask when hair starts feeling weak, stretchy, or breaks easily when brushing or styling,” and notes that hair that looks dull and refuses to hold a style even when moisturized is another sign.

How often should you use a protein mask?

There isn’t one universal schedule. The cadence should change with the state of your hair. Marie explains that frequency is tied to what the hair is showing you, noting that “those with healthy, color-treated or chemically processed hair may only need to use a protein mask every other month,” while “those whose hair strands resemble the description above may need to opt for monthly treatments to strengthen and restore hair health.” Taylor aligns with that sliding scale, saying “for most people, once or twice a month is enough to keep hair strong without overloading it,” and adds that “if your hair is chemically treated or heat-styled often, you might use it weekly until it feels healthier.”

What are the earliest red flags of protein overload you tell clients to watch for?

Protein overload shows up in the feel and behavior of the hair before anything else. Marie warns that “hair that has started to feel rough or straw-like or is perpetually frizzy to the point that curls lack definition has likely experienced protein overload,” adding that “excessively dry, brittle hair that breaks easily and behaves like that of an uncooked pasta noodle” is another clear cue. Taylor points to the same shift in texture, noting that “the earliest signs of protein overload are when hair feels stiff, rough, or dry instead of soft and manageable,” and explains that if “hair feels brittle or lacks movement,” it is time to pull back on protein and reintroduce hydration.

How we test and review products

We always enlist a range of testers for our makeup vertical, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While there are certainly products that can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and needs, hair products are often created with specific consumers in mind. Many are created in order to address a concern (dandruff, breakage, brittleness) or to work most effectively for a specific hair type (4C curls, wavy hair, gray hair). You wouldn't want to pick up a purple shampoo that's only been reviewed by someone with, say, auburn hair, or a diffuser that's never been tested by anyone with curls—right?

For our review of the best protein treatments for curly hair, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and hairstylists who have curly hair and/or experience working with curly-haired clients. Testers considered performance across four primary categories: efficacy, texture and experience, fragrance, and packaging. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

12 Zodiac Signs: Dates and Personality Traits of Each Star Sign

An illustrated rendition of Aries showing figure with hornsDaniel EgneusSave StorySave this storySave StorySave this story

As a professional astrologer, people ask me all types of questions. Of the most common curiosities is, "What are the best zodiac signs?" along with its evil twin, "What are the worst zodiac signs?" While I appreciate any and all astrological inquiries, including zodiac signs' compatibility, let me set the record straight: In astrology, there are no winners or losers. In fact, when you enter the metaphysical realm (the world of stars, tarot cards, tea leaves, etc.), that black-and-white binary goes straight out the window. In this magical, mystical domain, we work with nuance.

Every sign is a powerful, vital piece in the puzzle that is the zodiac. The four elements—air signs, fire signs, water signs, and earth signs—all work together to create a comprehensive whole, which shows up in your life as your unique personality traits. Although astrology is an extremely complex study, the most fundamental principle centers on the 12 familiar star signs of the zodiac. Over the centuries, each sign has developed its own associations, including myths, animals, and colors, and its own characteristics. Every sign is illuminated by its point of view, complete with powerful strengths and exhausting weaknesses.

From an astronomical perspective, we know that the sun doesn't move, as its stability anchors the entire solar system. But from our vantage here on planet Earth, the sun is in constant motion. We can depend on its daily performance (including inspiring sunrises and dramatic sunsets), as well as its location in the sky. The position the sun occupied at your exact moment of birth is known as your sun sign (sometimes referred to as your star sign or birth sign) and it's the cosmic launching pad for both beginners and professional astrologers. (Your rising sign is another very important placement and you can read about it in our guide to rising signs here). Your sun sign is determined by your date of birth and represents your core personality, sense of self, basic preferences, romantic compatibility, and how you move through the world. This astrological placement sheds light on your innate gifts as well as your hard-to-see blind spots. Your joys, wishes, flaws, and fears make you special, and when your sun sign is combined with the other planets and placements in your birth chart it creates a distinctive celestial profile that serves as your cosmic fingerprint.

Got it? Good. Now let's take this to the next level. The 12 zodiac signs are also divided into sub-groups: four triplicities and three quadruplicities. If this seems a bit confusing, don't worry, there's a method to the madness. Triplicities refer to the four zodiac sign elements, of which there are three zodiac signs in each group: Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Generally speaking, fire signs are passionate and exuberant, earth signs are practical and grounded, air signs are intellectual and curious, and water signs are intuitive and emotional.

Quadruplicities, also known as modalities, refer to the signs' qualities and where each zodiac sign occurs within its respective season. There are three modalities, with four zodiac signs in each: Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) occurs at the beginning of a new season and is excellent at taking action and starting initiatives. Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) occurs in the middle of seasons and are known to be steady, consistent forces that maintain movement, and Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, or Pisces) occurs at the end of a season and possess effortless fluidity well-suited to change and transformation.

As we continue layering astrological concepts, we uncover a rich and complex practice that delivers insight into our truest selves. Now, let's explore each sun sign's unique personality attributes, from the honorable to the…umm, kinda horrible? It's okay—we all have problems! Remember, darling, self-actualization begins with self-awareness, so read on to get to know yourself better and unlock the riches of your own special magic.

    Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Capricorn is climbing the mountain straight to the top and knows that patience, perseverance, and dedication are the only way to scale. Capricorn, the last earth sign of the zodiac, is represented by the sea goat, a mythological creature with the body of a goat and the tail of a fish. Accordingly, Capricorns are skilled at navigating both the material and emotional realms. Read your sign's full profile here.

    Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Despite the "aqua" in its name, Aquarius is actually the last air sign of the zodiac. Innovative, progressive, and shamelessly revolutionary, Aquarius is represented by the water bearer, the mystical healer who bestows water, or life, upon the land. Accordingly, Aquarius is the most humanitarian astrological sign. At the end of the day, Aquarius is dedicated to making the world a better place. Read your sign's full profile here.

    Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

The best face serums make it easy to get in your daily dose of potent, performance-focused actives. Whether they're dishing out antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, peptides, or botanical agents, face serums are excellent at delivering ingredients deep into your skin, using smaller molecules (compared to your face moisturizer, for example) to do so.

Notably, "serums don't contain air-tight, occlusive ingredients, which allows them to penetrate more deeply into the epidermis, carrying their active ingredients with them,” says Kenneth Howe, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. Even better: Whether your skin concerns range from fine lines, dark spots, acne, or all of the above, there's a serum ready to put in the work. Why we love it: You may be thinking: What the heck are growth factors? Allow Mina Amin, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Los Angeles, to explain. “Growth factors are proteins that play an important role in stimulating cell growth, regeneration, and healing,” she previously said. "In skin care, they’re typically used to encourage cell turnover and collagen production, and may help reduce fine lines and wrinkles.” This clinical-backed ingredient finds a home in one of the most dermatologist-recommended serums: SkinMedica TNS Advanced+ Serum. This Best of Beauty hall of famer offers a hefty growth factor blend and peptide complex for a noticeably plumper complexion in as little as two weeks.

Plenty of derms use it in their personal skin-care routines, like Heidi Prather, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Austin. "The formulation feels silky and smooth on your skin and provides a powerful combination of growth factors and plant-based antioxidants to boost collagen and elastin," she says. Sold yet? “At 32, I'm not not concerned about fine lines creeping in. But what I can actually report on for this product is how plump and glowy it makes my skin look after every single application. I can't fully explain how growth factors work but I do know that ingredients that support and encourage collagen and elastin production (which decreases as we age!) are vital to any skin-care routine. Growth factors and peptides? A dream team for an immediately more radiant complexion and slowing down signs of aging in the long run.” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Why it's worth it: Of course, you expect your face serum to hydrate, but Alastin’s HA (Hyaluronic Acid) Immerse Serum takes it to the next level. “One of the best ingredients I recommend when looking to plump skin is hyaluronic acid, because it pulls moisture into the skin,” says Nazanin Saedi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in East Norriton, PA. This serum sure delivers on that front: “It features a high molecular weight that not only puts HA on the skin for an immediate plumping effect, but also helps the skin stimulate its own natural production of HA.” Beyond that quick hit of hydration, the formula plays the long game: Octapeptide-45 supports your skin’s natural hyaluronic acid production, while hexapeptide-11 helps slow the breakdown of existing HA, so moisture levels stay supported over time, not just temporarily refreshed.

"To me, the mark of a noteworthy product (especially a serum) is one that your routine feels truly lonely without. That's how I feel about Alastin’s HA Immerse. It makes any moisturizer I layer over it all the more soothing, hydrating, and effective, but even without any next step, this serum helps me avoid the too-tight feeling I get when I wait too long to moisturize after washing my face. As someone with facial eczema flare-ups and borderline-mature skin, ever since using this serum, I've noticed fewer flakes and an all-over more supple look and feel." —Shanna Shipin, senior commerce director

Why it’s worth it: We can’t tell you exactly what happens during those 500 hours of aging that ginseng in this formula undergoes, but we can tell you our skin is into it. Sulwhasoo’s First Care Activating Serum pairs that slow-aged ginseng with the brand’s proprietary herbal blend (featuring peony root, lotus seed, white lily, Solomon’s seal, and rehmannia) to help skin look brighter, stronger, and more energized. The formula works beyond the surface, “helping repair the barrier, boost collagen, and fight signs of aging,” says Y. Claire Chang, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, who notes it’s “especially beneficial for mature or dull skin.”

And because this is K-beauty, the sensorial experience matters just as much as the results. “Sulwhasoo’s products always feel luxurious. The herbal extracts give it an elegant, grounding scent that feels so soothing,” adds Hee Jin Kim, MD, a board-certified internal medicine physician and medical director of Pureen MD in Fort Lee, NJ.

It's the ultimate K-beauty serum in my eyes because its barely-there texture allows me to layer it with as many other serums, sheet masks, and creams as I like without pilling, which is exactly what it's designed to do. Packed with antioxidant ginseng, it works with your other skin-care steps to boost hydration, elasticity, brightness, and overall skin barrier strength. "It is also packed with ingredients that work hard to protect, brighten, and boost your skin health without breaking you out," she adds. It's kind of everything I want in a skin-care product—effective and invisible. And after six weeks of using it, I've noticed a big difference in the hyperpigmentation on my face, which is a combination of generally uneven skin tone and dark spots from acne. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of using a face serum?

Serums tend to contain higher concentrations of their active ingredients than other skin-care products, leading to more dramatic results in a faster time period. On top of their potent formulations, facial serums are a mainstay for skin-care novices and lovers alike because of their lightweight textures. "Serums are the new moisturizers," New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Ellen Marmur, MD, tells Allure. "They are perfect for layering—like a primer on clean skin before makeup or sunscreen."

When should I use my serum in my routine?

According to New York City-based dermatologist David Kim, MD, you should apply your serum after cleansing and before your moisturizer. "Serums have more active ingredients in higher concentration, and they are formulated to either brighten, hydrate, or calm the skin," he says. "Then a moisturizer goes on top to lock in the moisture and to repair the skin barrier."

Can I use multiple serums at once? What can't be mixed?

Dr. Kim says you can tag-team multiple serums to tackle numerous skin-care concerns, but make sure you aren't flooding your pores with too many harsh active ingredients at once—that can lead to sensitivity and irritation. "For example, you can apply a lightweight vitamin C serum with a hydrating serum on top before sunscreen," says Dr. Kim. "This is particularly effective for people with oily, acne-prone skin who don't like a heavier, thicker moisturizer."

As for bad combinations? "I don't recommend layering strong, active ingredients because it can lead to irritation, such as combining a retinol with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs)," Nina Desai, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in California, previously told Allure. "I find the combination can be too drying and irritating to the skin." Dr. Desai also warned against using benzoyl peroxide with actives you might find in your serum.

For our list of the best face serums, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists.

Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Finding the best blushes for brown skin comes down to tone, texture, and technique. On deeper complexions, seemingly safe shades for fairer skin, such as soft pinks, pale peaches, and dusty roses, often disappoint—turning ashy, vanishing on impact, or sitting visibly on the skin's surface. So, what lives in richer, bolder territory? For starters, reds, berries, terracottas, hot pinks, and warm corals that echo how melanin-rich skin naturally flushes. But pigment is only half the equation: The formula determines whether a blush actually delivers. Creams and liquids can help anchor pigment and prevent the first-swipe fade, while powders require a finely milled texture and higher pigment loadings to avoid chalkiness and to actually show up.

Why we love it: If you want intense color, Danessa Myricks’ Yummy Blurring Balm Flushed earns its keep fast. This hybrid balm-powder formula delivers rich pigment with a soft-matte payoff that blurs the look of pores and smooths uneven skin. The texture starts creamy and then sets down into a blurred finish. The rich Red Velvet shade is especially strong here; it’s a true, blue-leaning red that shows up immediately, then builds cleanly. You can sheer it out for a flushed effect or layer it into a saturated statement cheek. That versatility comes down to the formula: Upsalite does the heavy lifting by absorbing excess oil and sweat while maintaining hydration, which is why the finish stays soft-focus instead of cakey. Olive-derived squalane and hyaluronic acid keep the formula flexible, allowing it to move with the skin rather than sit on top of it.

    Alessandra Foresto

Why we love it: Finding a matte blush that doesn't go ashy or flat on deeper skin is tricky, but the Tower 28 GetSet Blur + Set Matte Powder Blush delivers long-wearing color without the chalky finish. This Best of Beauty-winning pressed powder behaves more like a setting powder than a traditional blush, depositing color exactly where the brush lands and diffusing seamlessly as you blend. The blush formula is breathable, smoothing the look of pores while keeping the finish soft. Built-in shine control from kaolin clay keeps the color looking intentional all day, while squalane prevents the dryness matte blush is notorious for. For deeper skin tones, Samo Spritzer offers a muted rosy mauve that sculpts without dulling the skin, while Feliz Fresca delivers high-impact pink pigment that stays saturated all day.

“I finish my makeup with a few dabs of this blush every day—my most used shade is Samo Spritzer, a rose mauve, but I also like punchy pink Feliz Fresca. The powder blush is so pigmented, there’s no need to apply multiple layers (unless you like that look, then go wild), and because it has a matte finish, it stays on for hours!” —Alessandra Foresto

    Jessica Cruel

Why we love it: Jones Road’s The Best Blush in Berry succeeds where many blushes fail on deeper skin: It balances undertones beautifully and blends seamlessly. This talc-free powder delivers a berry-pink flush that mimics the look of real skin warmth. The pigment appears immediately on medium to deep complexions but builds gradually, making it easy to control the intensity. The finely milled texture blends seamlessly into the skin, diffusing edges without dulling the shade or clinging to texture. This is thanks in part to squalane in the formula, which helps the powder melt into the skin, keeping the finish smooth and comfortable throughout the day.

“I’ve been using the Jones Road blush in Berry for years. It’s my go-to powder formula for days when I need a bright pop that won’t turn greasy under camera lights. It’s so pigmented that I can even use my fingers to apply. And for someone who does makeup in the back of Ubers, needing one less brush is an asset.” —Jessica Cruel, editor in chief

Why we love it: Color payoff is a non-negotiable when it comes to deeper skin tones, and Juvia’s Place Blushed Duo in Vol. 1 delivers immediately—no heavy layering needed. The pigment shows up on first contact and stays true as you blend, and both shades are intentionally saturated, so you get richness and depth without having to overwork the product. What makes this duo especially effective is how the two tones interact: The deeper berry brings depth, while the terracotta shade adds lift and warmth, allowing you to customize payoff depending on how bold or sculpted you want the cheek to look. Even as you build, the pigment remains clean and dimensional instead of turning muddy or flat.

Why we love it: Layerability is what makes this blush duo especially effective on deeper complexions. “Patrick Ta Blush Duos are one of my favorite picks not only for the formula but also for the packaging,” Jordon Tiller, a makeup artist based in NYC, says.” The dual-format compact allows you to build pigment in controlled layers, starting with cream for adhesion and finishing with powder for longevity, which helps prevent ashiness and uneven payoff.

“Start with your cream product to perfect your base, and top it with the powder. Both formulas pack a punch with a beautiful blend,” Tiller adds. Shade-wise, he notes that She Left Me On Red works especially well on deep skin with yellow or golden undertones, while She’s A Doll is a bright, neutral-leaning pink that blends seamlessly into deeper complexions, including neutral and olive undertones.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are certain textures, such as creams, gels, or powders, more reliable for deeper skin tones?

“Cream formulas are my favorite to use on deeper skin tones. The blend is unmatched,” says Tiller, who points to their flexibility as the biggest advantage. “I love that you can choose whether you really want to build up pigment or sheer it out based on application.” That adjustability is key for deeper complexions, where highly pigmented blush needs to diffuse smoothly without latching onto texture or disappearing as it’s blended.

What shade families do you recommend for brown skin?

“I personally love red-family shades on brown skin,” says Tiller. “A lot of clients get scared when they see a color that striking, but it’s such a versatile shade.” On deeper complexions, red-based blushes tend to enhance warmth and dimension, rather than compete with undertones or fade away during blending. When sheered out, they can mimic a natural flush, and when built up, they hold their saturation without turning ashy—which is why they’re often more reliable than lighter pinks that can skew chalky.

What’s the best way to apply blush to get maximum color payoff on deeper skin tones?

“Layering is key for maximum payoff as well as staying power,” Tiller explains, emphasizing technique as much as product choice. “For cream products, I will go in with my favorite MAC 130S brush to apply or a Beautyblender,” he says, before reinforcing the color. “Top it with a little translucent setting powder, and then top off with a powder [blush] formula.” This method anchors pigment to the skin so it doesn’t fade or shift throughout the day. He also recommends mixing tones for added dimension, noting that “if I use a red tone blush as cream for my base, I will top it with a pink powder to merge everything for a seamless blend.”

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best blushes for brown skin, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Whether straightening your hair is an occasional or daily occurrence, your delicate strands deserve to be styled with one of the best hair straighteners out there. As with other hair tools, like hair dryers and blow-dryer brushes, there are tons of options out there, and some are lower in price than others. But what you don’t pay in money, you might in results, since low-quality heated tools (regardless of their price tag) can quickly lead to scorched strands, breakage, and dullness. When it comes to a searing-hot device between which you’re sandwiching your delicate strands, it’s worth investing in quality.

What makes a hair straightener stand out? Look for a device that provides multiple heat settings to adjust to your hair type and has plates that are either ceramic, titanium, or a mix of both. “In short, ceramic works best when you want gentle, consistent heat, while titanium is better if you need strength and speed,” says New York City-based hairstylist Kaprisha Gipson. “It really comes down to your hair type and what you prioritize more: softness and protection, or efficiency and a super-sleek finish.”

Our editors have withstood the heat of multiple flatirons to find the best ones currently available (you’re welcome). The standouts can help you score pin-straight hair at home while mitigating heat damage and frizz (though, no matter what heated tool you’re using, applying a heat protectant before styling is always a good idea). Lucky for all of us, there's a flatiron on the market for every hair type, styling goal, and tool preference, so you can smoothly find your straightening soulmate. On top of putting them to the test ourselves, we've scoured the web and talked to pro stylists to dish on the best straighteners for all types of locks, sans-scorch.

You may be wary of using high heat on your hair, but hair straighteners are perfectly safe for your strands when used correctly. "The key is to use them on dry hair and ideally as a finishing tool. I typically recommend smoothing with a round brush before straightening. Always apply a heat protectant before styling to shield your strands from high temperatures," says hairstylist and founder of Trademark Beauty Joseph Maine. “Also, it's important to keep the flatiron clean to ensure it heats evenly and doesn't snag your hair.”

How do I minimize heat damage from my straightener?

Heat damage is an avoidable issue if you have the right high-quality tool and prep routine. Sure, there are tons of flatiron options out there, and some are lower in price than others. But what you don’t pay in money, you might pay in results, as low-quality heated tools (regardless of their price tag) can quickly lead to scorched strands and breakage. When it comes to a searing-hot device you’re sandwiching your delicate strands between, it’s worth investing in quality.

What makes a hair straightener stand out? Here’s the gist: You’ll want a device that provides multiple heat settings to adjust to your hair type and has plates that are either ceramic, titanium, or a mix of both.

Beyond the tool you’re using, every single hairstylist agreed that the most important part of preventing heat damage is using a heat protectant. “I tell all my clients to think of it as a lightweight shield that keeps the cuticle sealed while the heat does its work,” says Gipson. A heat protectant creates a barrier over your strands and adds slip between your hair and heated plates to help prevent moisture loss, protecting the hair from getting brittle from exposure to extremely high temperatures.

New York City-based hairstylist Devin Toth adds to avoid passing over the same section of hair multiple times. “It's better to go over it once, slowly,” he explains. “People tend to have more damage in their face-framing area of hair because they hit it with the iron too many times to get them just right." Another key to straightening safely is to be mindful of the temperature of your flatiron. According to Toth, the optimal temperature to avoid burning is 365 degrees Fahrenheit, but it truly depends on your hair type and needs. “Fine hair generally needs much less heat than coarse hair or curly textures,” says Parra.

    How do hair straighteners work?

"Flatirons work by using heated plates to temporarily alter the structure of your hair, making it straight. When you apply the heated plates to your hair, the heat breaks down the hydrogen bonds in the hair's cortex, causing it to straighten," says Maine. "Once your hair cools down or gets wet, these bonds reform, and your hair goes back to its natural state," Maine adds that varying materials like ceramic, titanium, or tourmaline have different effects on the heat distribution and speed of the straightening process.

What are the differences between ceramic and titanium plates?

These two materials are both effective at straightening hair, hence why they’re the most popular options available for flatiron plates, but each caters to different needs. According to all the stylists we spoke with, ceramic is the gentler option of the two, making it suitable for all hair types, but especially ideal for those with fine or fragile strands. “Ceramic plates reduce the risk of hot spots that can burn the hair,” notes Parra.

As for titanium, these plates do provide quicker, straighter results, but their heat can make them too intense for finer hair types. “Titanium plates deliver smooth and shiny hair that is noticeable under any lights, they deliver heat very quickly and usually a professional would use these types of straighteners,” explains Luis. Overall, we recommend titanium plates for those who have thicker hair types that are more resilient to heat damage.

How should I choose a hair straightener?

Picking a hair straightener is a personal choice and largely depends on your hair type and styling desires. "For fine or damaged hair, look for a flatiron with adjustable heat settings to prevent overheating—ceramic plates are great for even heat distribution without getting too hot," Maine tells Allure. He adds that if your hair is on the thicker, or coarser side, a hair straightener with titanium plates is ideal because they "can handle higher heat and manage frizz more effectively."

Toth explains that plate size and shape are key to selecting a hair straightener. "The wider the plate, the straighter the hair will look. So if you like to really bend and bevel the ends of your hair then choose a more narrow plate," says Toth. Maine echoes Toth, explaining that a "wider plate can straighten more hair at a time, which is useful for thicker hair, while a narrower plate is better for short hair, detailed styling like bangs, or achieving specialized styles like flatiron waves or curls.

According to Maine, you should also consider the type of plate edges featured on a hair straightener before making your purchase. "If the plates of the flatiron are slightly protruding out of the iron and the edges of the plates are beveled, then you will be able to effortlessly make curls with this tool," he states. "If the plates are not protruding with beveled edges, then the iron is mainly designed for straightening hair."

How we test and review products

We always enlist a range of testers for any review, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While some can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and concerns, many are created with specific consumers and their needs in mind. When reviewing tools, we also take into account testers’ experience levels. For instance, an innovative new blow-dryer may feature industry-leading technology, but if the only people who find it intuitive to use are professional hairstylists, we have to consider this when determining whether it is worthy of a recommendation.

For our review of the best hair straighteners, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and hair stylists with varying hair types and desired styling outcomes, and whether one product was tested across multiple hair types. Testers considered performance across three primary categories: efficacy, safety, ease of use, and value. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Why it’s worth it: It’s no surprise this mousse snagged a 2024 Best of Beauty Award. While it applies super dark (like, can’t-go-outside dark) and can look a bit streaky when applied, it dries quickly and doesn’t transfer onto clothing once it has some time to set. After a two-hour wait—the fastest on this list—and a rinse, it delivers one of the most natural-looking tans our editors have tried. Even if you err on the paler side, even the deepest of the four shades of this tanner reads believable with its olive-toned (not orange!) finish.

The aloe vera base keeps skin hydrated, while added caffeine (a known depuffing ingredient in body care) gives a subtle smoothing effect. The color continues to deepen over 24 hours, but never veers into “too much.” Pro tip: Use a very light layer on the face to avoid looking a little too tan. When we tested this product, we noticed it would typically fade after about five days, which is to be expected for a two-hour development window.

“At first, I was skeptical about how dark this tanner goes on, but it wins major points for drying quickly and never feeling tacky. The fast development is clutch—I can apply it at 5 p.m. and be gorgeously bronzed by 7 p.m., just in time for a dinner res. Even on naturally pale skin, the color turns out a believable golden bronze, so I never stress.” —Lily Wohlner, commerce writer

Why it’s worth it: A perennial Best of Beauty and Readers’ Choice Award winner, the Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer has held onto its drugstore-icon status for good reason. It delivers a soft, believable bronze without any of the usual self-tanner hassle—no marathon dry times, no streaky surprises, and no rinse-off routine. The silky lotion sinks in fast, builds an even glow over a few days (make it a post-shower habit for effortless upkeep), and applies easily with just your hands—no mitt required. Thanks to hydrating glycerin and vitamin E, it doubles as your everyday body lotion, leaving skin so smooth and conditioned that you can skip an extra moisturizer altogether.

“To apply this tanner, I use my hands since it’s more of a lotion and work it into my body (and immediately wash my hands afterward, because the last thing I want is orange palms). Why it’s worth it: Bondi Sands Self-Tanning Foam, a favorite of Irvine, California-based spray tan artist Audrey Spina, is a lightweight mousse that applies smoothly and dries down fast without a sticky finish or risking staining your clothing. “For the price, it gives the most even color, and the undertones lean olive and avoid that orange look that cheaper formulas often give,” says Spina, who recommends it to clients who want something reliable without spending too much.

Another pro? The instant tint makes it easy to see where you’ve applied it. Simply add a few pumps to a tanning mitt and use long sweeping motions all over your body, and leave it on for a minimum of six hours. Though it’s meant to develop overnight (usually a risky move for anyone with white sheets), it stays put almost instantly without transferring. Even better: It skips the classic self-tan scent. Instead, you get a soft coconut aroma, paired with soothing aloe and glycerin, so skin feels plush and hydrated while the bronze deepens.

Why we love it: Sophia Avanzato, the founder of Main Line Spray Tan based in Villanova, Pennsylvania, calls the L’Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze Self Tanning Mist “incredibly easy to use.” Its secret? A 360-degree wide-jet applicator that sprays a lightweight, fine mist, offering a smooth, airbrushed effect. It may sound messy, but as long as you do it in the shower, the process is seamless. There’s no rubbing required, and the formula dries almost instantly and develops in as little as two hours. The result is a smooth, polished glow that’s subtle enough for a natural look, with the option to layer for a deeper bronze if you so please.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make drugstore self-tanner look natural?

A natural-looking result comes down to skin prep, blending, and restraint, says Avanzato. “You want to use less product on dry areas like elbows, knees, hands, and feet—as that’s where at-home tans tend to give themselves away—and always blend these spots with a damp mitt or makeup brush to diffuse the color,” she says. Another tip? Work in light layers instead of one heavy application because “it’s easier to build color than correct it.”

How do you prep for self-tanner?

Spina says prepping to apply a drugstore self-tanner is the same as you would for any other at-home tanner. “Shower and exfoliate the day before, and never the day of,” she says. Once you get out, “skip the heavy lotions—a light moisturizer only on dry spots like elbows and knees is enough.” Once the foam is on, keep your skin cool and dry until rinse time to get an even, streak-free tan.

What makes drugstore self-tanner different than prestige self-tanner?

“The biggest differences between drugstore and prestige formulations typically come down to ingredient quality and added skin-care benefits,” says Avanzato. “Prestige brands may use a higher quality DHA (the active tanning ingredient), and they may include more hydrating or skin-soothing ingredients.”

That said, Avanzato notes that many drugstore formulas perform impressively well and are more accessible for everyday use. “Prestige versions may offer a more luxurious feel, but a well-prepped and well-blended drugstore tan can look just as beautiful.”

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide shade range inclusive of consumers with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is its packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best drugstore self tanners, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and makeup artists to review the products. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product's performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. Toners have a reputation for being harsh (to put it politely), but the best toners for dry skin prove that’s not always true. While we do appreciate an exfoliating option for extra resurfacing, these products tend to come with high concentrations of actives, synthetic fragrances, and alcohol, especially if you’re using an intensive or astringent formula. That's all fine unless you have dry and sensitive skin. In that case, you should seek out face toners with a soothing, hydrating roster of ingredients. Even better news? There are a lot to choose from.

You may already know the heavy hitters. "Hyaluronic acid is a hydration powerhouse that attracts moisture to your skin; glycerin helps draw in moisture and keep your skin soft; ceramides help build the skin barrier," explains Connecticut-based, board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD. Nourishing ingredients like ceramides and niacinamide have also made their way into these formulas for an extra calming effect.

Why it's worth it: If Thayers’s original toner is too harsh—which may be due to its high concentration of exfoliating witch hazel extract—try the Hydrating Milky Toner, a moisture-packed formula made especially for dry and sensitive skin. Unlike the mattifying original, this gentle, alcohol-free toner quenches skin with a hydrating combination of glycerin and sodium hyaluronate (a form of hyaluronic acid) while snow mushroom extract seals moisture in for incredibly dewy results. Elderflower also makes an appearance in this formula to soothe and calm irritated skin, while a blend of glyceryl-based emollients smooths any rough, flaky texture.

“This is a major upgrade from the Seabreeze toner my mom gave me in middle school. The texture is so satisfying—it's super-thick, almost jelly-like, and feels so cooling on my face. It also sinks in seconds and gives me the perfect amount of glow. My skin looks smooth, but not too shiny (my pet peeve underneath makeup). I use it twice a day and genuinely look forward to slathering it on after I wash my face.” —Sarah Felbin, senior commerce editor

    Frequently Asked Questions

What do toners for dry skin do?

Toners have a reputation for exfoliating, but many formulas also contain hydrating ingredients to plump and soften skin. "Toners for dry skin are like the extra drink of water your face didn't know it needed," says Dr. Gohara. "They help hydrate, soothe, and balance your skin. Old-school toners were known for stripping the skin, whereas new ones can do good." She adds that the right toner locks in moisture and creates a better canvas for your moisturizer to get to work.

When should dry skin types use a toner?

According to Dr. Rabach, those with dry skin should use a toner after washing their face, especially if they still feel or see makeup and sunscreen residue after cleansing. “This step helps balance the skin’s pH and prep it to fully absorb the rest of your skincare products, like serum and moisturizer,” she says.

What ingredients should I look for in a toner for dry skin?

As you may know, not all toners are created for all skin types, and your dry skin needs a formulation that won't over-strip your skin's conditioning natural oils. Hadley King, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, says that dry and sensitive skin types should avoid harsh active ingredients in their skin-care products, like alcohol, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid, in order to reduce the risk of irritation. "If you have dry skin, look for toners with hydrating ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, lecithin, aloe vera, and rosewater," she adds. Thankfully, these ingredients are not only easy to find but also featured in an array of skin-care products across every budget.

Which toner ingredients should dry skin types avoid?

Look for formulas that are alcohol-, fragrance-, and dye-free since they can exacerbate dryness, according to Dr. Rabach. “Avoid toners with active ingredients like retinols and exfoliating acids which can dry your skin out more,” she adds.

For our list of the best toners for dry skin, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from three dermatologists.
